Return Air Filters & Supply Air Filters/ Floor Register Filters
Return Air Filters
Return air grills are required to be a far greater size when a filter is added to the grill. If the system did not have a filter when first designed, a heating specialist or the manufacturer needs to be consulted to ensure that the increase in surface area is adequate to avoid the heater overheating, causing damage to it and causing the heater to shut down. The restriction of air flow will also cause heating costs to increase and the possible separation of the ductwork within the heating system.

Supply Air Vent/ Floor Register Filters
Supply air filters restrict the airflow from the heating system and are generally not included in the design specifications when the heater is installed. Nor do the manufacturers allow for this restriction in air in their minimum number of outlets required to be fully open for the heater to operate safely.
Therefore, they cause restriction of air flow, over heating of the unit and possible damage to the ductwork. In severe cases they crack a heat exchanger within the heater making it able to circulate carbon monoxide within the house.
Energy Safe Victoria has advised all manufacturers to clearly specify the minimum number of outlets required to be fully open in their installation and operating instructions. Therefore an informed customer would not restrict the airflow in their system by closing off vents or placing filters in their system which would reduce the air flow required to operate the heater safely.
